How does extinction affects the environment?

When an animal or a plant species gets extincted, obviously there’s a negative change on the environment but, being more specific, how does an animal or a plant’s extinction affects the environment at a long-term?

We all live in a huge ecosystem with diverse food chains, if only one specie is affected then all the food chain will get affected. That’s why every specie is escential for our ecosystem.
