How do belief systems affect the political and social structure in a country?

Nowadays some belief systems, like ISIS, cause a lot of issues in their countries.

In my opinion, belief system clearly have an intervention in a country development, since some countries consider religion they way of acting and follow their rules as a constitution, on the other hand the social structure is affected when people are bound to belief in something.
