Why is belief system more important than our personal development?

Often we see parents force their kids with certain model of thought but why is this imposition more important than our freedom of speech or our freedom of expression given that human rights should come first and this impositions are meaningless in a future scope due to the fact that in college or when one becomes independent there's no one to impediment your own will.
